Pregnancy & Childbirth
- Doulas of North America (DONA) is the oldest, largest and most respected doula association in the world. They are an international, non-profit organization of doulas that strives to have every doula trained/educated to provide the highest quality/standards for birth and/or postpartum support to birthing women and their families.
- Seacoast Doula Group is a network of independent doulas that live and work in the seacoast area of New Hampshire and southern Maine. Even though we are separate business entities, we support and complement each other to provide new mothers and their families a broader set of services and greater coverage and availability. I am a member of this group.
- The Coastal Family Birth Retreat is New Hampshire Seacoast's first free-standing Birth Center. They offer birth center services as well as homebirth services. Their two birth suites are fully equipped and nicely furnished, each with its own heated birth pool. The CFBR also offers a birth pool as rental for homebirth clients.
- Whole Life Health Care is an integrative practice in Newington, NH that allows a combination of both conventional and alternative therapies in one location. They care for patients from birth through geriatrics.
- Lamaze International is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote, support and protect normal birth through education and advocacy.
- Founded in 1918, Childbirth Connection is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving maternity care quality and value. They promote safe, effective and satisfying evidence-based maternity care for women and families. Evidence-based maternity care means using the best research about the safety and effectiveness of specific tests, treatments, and interventions to help you make informed decisions.
- Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) is a collaborative effort of numerous individuals and more than 50 organizations representing over 90,000 members. Our mission is to promote a wellness model of maternity care that will improve birth outcomes and substantially reduce costs.
Breastfeeding
- Dr. Jack Newman , physician and pediatrician, founded the first hospital based breastfeeding clinic in Canada in 1984. He has several publications on breastfeeding, and in 2000 published a help guide for professionals and mothers on breastfeeding, called The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers. In 2005, he and others brought out a DVD for breastfeeding called Dr. Jack Newman's Visual Guide to Breastfeeding. He is a breastfeeding guru.
- La Leche League was founded to give information and encouragement, mainly through personal help, to all mothers who want to breastfeed their babies. While complementing the care of the physician and other health care professionals, it recognizes the unique importance of one mother helping another to perceive the needs of her child and to learn the best means of fulfilling those needs.
- The Massachusetts Breastfeeding Coalition is a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve public health by transforming our culture: making breastfeeding the norm through education, advocacy, and collaboration. Most of MBC's activities involve helping health care providers support and promote breastfeeding. Their goal is help providers prevent breastfeeding problems, and recognize them and solve them easily should they occur. All of their materials are evidence-based, are free from commercial bias, and can be downloaded from their website at no cost.
Postpartum Care
- Mothering Moon offers comprehensive mother and baby care in Maine and New Hampshire.
- Seacoast Doula Group
- Postpartum Support International (PSI) was founded in 1987 by Jane Honikman and is headquartered in Santa Barbara, California. The purpose of the organization is to increase awareness among public and professional communities about the emotional changes that women experience during pregnancy and postpartum. Approximately 15% of all women will experience postpartum depression following the birth of a child. Up to 10% will experience depression or anxiety during pregnancy. When the mental health of the mother is compromised, it affects the entire family.
